The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to enhancing the educational experiences of students statewide through its leadership and regulation of interscholastic athletics. TSSAA prioritizes the holistic development of students by collaborating with schools to integrate athletics into the educational framework, emphasizing values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and integrity.
TSSAA is an independent organization governed and operated by its member school principals. The organization is not owned by any institution or government entity. Instead, its leadership and operations are overseen by a board of member school administrators and an executive staff that represent the interests of the member schools. Member schools have created TSSAA to ensure that interscholastic sports serve as a vehicle for advancing education, inspiring academic achievement, and strengthening social welfare among youth.
TSSAA's mission is rooted in benefiting the broader community by providing equitable opportunities for student-athletes and fostering personal growth through participation in organized sports. These programs not only complement classroom education but also instill lifelong skills that prepare students to become positive contributors to society.
The organization reinvests its resources into initiatives that enrich the lives of students, promote physical and mental well-being, and encourage civic engagement. Through its work, TSSAA supports the development of good citizens, builds a strong foundation for community leadership, and fosters values that strengthen the fabric of civil society. By integrating these principles into its operations and mission, TSSAA contributes meaningfully to education and community improvement statewide.
Legislative Council
Legislative authority to make changes to the Constitution and Bylaws is vested in a council of twelve administrators. Council members are school administrators elected — four from each Grand Division of the state — for three-year terms. The Council ascertains the sentiment of the membership toward such changes through annual regional meetings in each Grand Division of the state where proposals are discussed by school principals.

Board of Control
The Board of Control is the executive authority of TSSAA. It is the body which enforces TSSAA regulations, conducts state meetings, authorizes expenditures of TSSAA and registers officials. As with the Legislative Council, the board is composed of twelve school administrators, four from each Grand Division of the state, each serving three-year terms.
Executive Staff
The Board of Control employs an executive officer and sufficient administrative and clerical help to execute the policies established by the schools and the Board of Control. At present there are 15 full-time and one part-time support employees.
