About Classification

TSSAA classifies schools by Grade 9-12 enrollment. The classification determines the tournament series each team will participate in during the postseason. Prior to postseason play, a school can and is encouraged to schedule games against any school it desires (regardless of classification), with very limited restrictions. Only in football must a team play a particular schedule of games against teams in its own classification, however, this still allows for as many as six games per year to be scheduled against opponents of the school's choice.
