Sullivan East Middle School eighth-grader Madi Ryals has been recognized with the NFHS Student-Athlete Award of Excellence, presented by the TSSAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations, for her exemplary leadership and sportsmanship.

Ryals, who participates in basketball, cross country, and track, demonstrated consistent leadership throughout the basketball season by taking initiative without being asked. Her coach noted that she regularly assisted with pregame preparations, including distributing meals, uniforms, and equipment, and led team exercises when coaches were attending to other responsibilities.

What makes Ryals' contributions particularly noteworthy is that she maintained this positive attitude and willingness to serve despite not being in the starting lineup and sometimes receiving limited playing time during games. Instead of focusing on personal statistics or recognition, she prioritized team needs.

The impact of her behavior extended beyond immediate assistance to coaches. Younger players regularly looked to Ryals as an example, potentially developing their own leadership qualities through her consistent modeling.

Outside of her athletic pursuits, Ryals enjoys farming and hiking activities.

This recognition highlights the importance of character development through school athletics. While physical skills and competition receive significant attention, qualities like initiative, selflessness, and responsibility form the foundation of true sportsmanship. Students like Ryals demonstrate that leadership isn't about playing time or spotlight moments, but consistent actions that benefit others.
