Nathan DeLoach
In a time when sportsmanship so often takes a backseat to competition, Chattanooga Christian’s junior quarterback Nathan DeLoach has shown that leadership and respect can go hand in hand with athletic excellence. Nathan, a standout student-athlete who participates in varsity soccer, basketball, and football, was recently recognized with the NFHS Student-Athlete Award of Excellence, presented by TSSAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
What sets Nathan apart is not just his skill on the field or court, but his commitment to setting an example for his peers in the most fundamental ways. After each away game, Nathan made it a priority to ensure the visiting team’s locker room was left spotless—a sign of respect for the host school. He frequently stayed late to sweep floors and take out trash, demonstrating how simple actions can make a big impact.
What started as a solo effort soon grew into something bigger: inspired by Nathan’s actions, more and more teammates decided to stay and lend a hand. By the end of the season, 15-20 players had joined in, following their quarterback’s lead and making the task a team effort.
While impressive in itself, Nathan’s actions point to a larger lesson about why sportsmanship matters in educational athletics. Traits like accountability, selflessness, and respect for others are as important as athletic performance, and students like Nathan remind us that character is something to practice every day, both on and off the field.
In addition to his athletic responsibilities, Nathan leads Bible studies, maintains his place as an A-student, and participates in his school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His ability to balance these commitments while staying grounded in his values is something to admire—not just for teammates, but for the entire Chattanooga community.
Athletics provide young people with a platform—not just to showcase their talent, but to set an example for those around them. When a starting quarterback like Nathan DeLoach uses his influence to inspire others to take pride in small yet meaningful acts, it creates a ripple effect that extends beyond the game. Leaving a locker room clean may seem minor, but it speaks volumes about respect, gratitude, and the values that sports strive to teach.
Nathan’s story is more than an inspiring moment—it’s a reminder of what can happen when young athletes use their influence for good. Let’s all take a page from his playbook by prioritizing respect and humility in our own lives. After all, the best victories often come not on a scoreboard, but through the example we set for others.
