The TSSAA Student Advisory Committee consists of a diverse group of students and student-athletes from member schools throughout the state. This team will act as ambassadors for their peers and the TSSAA while gaining insights into the sports industry through various committee activities. The committee will ensure that student perspectives are represented in TSSAA governance, focusing on key areas such as current issues affecting student-athletes, feedback on rules and regulations, contributions to TSSAA special initiatives, and the promotion of a positive image of student-athletes.

Mission Statement:

We strive to advocate for the best interests of all students and student-athletes by bringing their concerns to the TSSAA and creating initiatives for future improvement. Our mission is to enhance sportsmanship and integrity by cultivating an ethical, safe, and competitive environment both on and off the field.

Nomination Process:

The TSSAA will provide the opportunity for student-athletes in member schools to participate as part of the TSSAA Student Advisory Committee. Nomination forms will be sent to the member schools administration via e-mail and will be made available on this page. The purpose of the committee will be to provide a voice for students and student-athletes within the TSSAA governance structure, in the following areas:

  • Current issues facing student-athletes
  • Input regarding rules and regulations
  • TSSAA special initiatives
  • Promotion of positive image of student-athletes and the supporting student body.

The TSSAA Student Advisory Committee will consist of 20 total members from 6 members from each region of the state (East, Middle, West).

The term duration for each member is one school year. A committee member who is a junior may choose to reapply the following year, but there is no guarantee that the position will be awarded to them again.

The TSSAA Student Advisory Committee prioritizes inclusivity and diversity. We believe that a diverse committee enhances our discussions and decisions, ensuring that every student and student-athlete's perspective is acknowledged and respected.

A qualified individual has the following attributes:

  • Be a junior or senior
  • Strong character and commitment to sportsmanship and integrity
  • Demonstrate leadership within school
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater the previous school year
  • Two Recommendation Letters from an acceptable individual (Principal, Coach, Athletic Director, or Teacher)
  • Parent approval and signature

Once applicants have been screened, the respective Executive Staff members will conduct interviews via zoom. From there, they will choose the selected individuals that will represent their region on the Student Committee.

Proposed student duties as a TSAC member include the following:

  • Attend both fall and spring meetings (Meeting logistics will be provided to the TSAC students upon selection. However, zoom will be available for both fall and spring)
  • Be the voice of students from their respective regions within the TSSAA governance structure, and offer input and suggestions on current issues facing students
  • Give input regarding rules and regulations
  • Give input and actively participate in the development of TSSAA special initiatives and campaigns
  • Officials Appreciation, RefReps, Sports Medicine Appreciation, Mental Health, Bullying, Drinking & Driving
  • Promote a positive image of student participation in interscholastic competition

We would like to clarify that the duties outlined for our committee members are tentative and may evolve based on what each member deems doable and manageable within their respective regions. We understand that individual circumstances can vary significantly, and it is essential that we remain flexible in our expectations.

Student Advisory Committee Meetings:

  • The Fall Advisory Committee Meetings are proposed to be held in each region for one-day at a member school in the region. Students will only be required to go to the meeting held in their respective region. If a member of the committee is not able to attend in person, a zoom call will be hosted for them to join. However, since this is our only in-person meeting at the moment, we encourage everyone to come if feasible.

  • The Spring Advisory Committee Meeting is proposed to be held via zoom during Christmas Break. (Committee members will be asked to help select a date/time frame to have this meeting that is possible for everyone.)

  • Students from each region may choose to meet at their own discretion to discuss and plan ideas as long as one of the Executive Staff members is made aware of the meeting two weeks in advance and is given a reason regarding the meeting being held.
