BOARD OF CONTROL MINUTES June 5-7, 2018 Murfreesboro, TN

  3. Voted to give the state office permission to conduct the Regional and State Volleyball Tournament draw.
  4. Approved the Financial Report of the 2018 Basketball Tournament Series
  5. Approved the Financial Report of the 2018 Wrestling Tournament Series
  6. Approved the Report of the 2018 Athletic Directors Conference
  7. Approved the Report of the 2018 Cheer Coaches Conference
  8. Approved the Sportsmanship – Review of the 2017-2018 School Year This completes the 27th year of the sportsmanship program and we continue to approach this area from many different aspects each year. A full report was given to the Board of Control by the staff in regard to the number of coaches ejected, disciplinary action, unsportsmanlike incidents investigated, etc. This allowed them to review our approach to this very critical area in all of our sports. In addition, they reviewed the 23rd year of the A.F. Bridges Program.
  9. Approved the Division II Need-Based Financial Aid Final Report
  10. Heard update regarding the administrators’ meetings schedule. These meetings will be held the last two weeks in September.
  11. Heard update regarding the collection of information regarding regional basketball tournament sites.
  12. Approved the DDivision I and Division II 2018 State Basketball Tournament Allotments
  13. Heard an update regarding the partnership with the NFHS Network.
  14. Heard update regarding the TSSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. Voted to approve updated NFHS/TSSAA Guidelines on Handling Practices and Contests During Lightning or Thunder Disturbances.
  15. Voted that (a) TSSAA continue to print the TSSAA Directory and TACA pay expenses and shipping. (b) TACA would be allowed to print one card that will be good at our championship events all year with picture ID required and one person allowed free admittance. (c) TACA will have a representative at the gates to help with disrespectful coaches. (d) All passes must be sent to the Athletic Director of the School. No passes should be sent to an individual’s home address.
  16. Heard TMSAA Championship Events Report. The TMSAA held state championships in Cross Country and Track and Field during the 2017-2018 school year.
  17. Classification The 2018-2019 school year starts the second year of our four-year cycle. Board policy is to reevaluate enrollments in the middle of the classification cycle. Those schools that have a 20% decrease or increase which causes them to move to a higher or lower class will be moved during the 2018-2019 school year. The Board reviewed the timeline that the staff will follow.
  18. Hendersonville Christian Academy sent a letter notifying their intentions to withdraw from TSSAA for the 2018-2019 school year.
  19. Lakeway Christian Academy was previously approved for TSSAA membership for the 2018-2019 school year at the March meeting. The Board denied the school’s request to postpone their membership until the 2019-2020 school year.
  20. Denied Rossville Christian Academy’s request to continue to be allowed to participate in the post-season basketball series and while playing an independent football schedule.
  21. Approved request of Tipton Christian Academy for TSSAA Membership. It is a small private school accredited by AdvancEd with an enrollment of approximately 250 students in grades K-11. They plan to compete in basketball, cross country, golf, volleyball, and track and field. They will be placed in Division II, Class A, District 6 in all sports they offer which are sanctioned by our organization.
  22. Denied the request submitted by Portland High School requesting that the Board reclassify Division I baseball, basketball, and softball into four classes effective with the 2019-2020 school year.
  23. The Board voted to approve sectional meets and the state championship event for Unified Track & Field beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.
  24. Voted for the state office to gather information and feedback from member schools regarding middle school and junior varsity officials’ fees and report back to the Board at a future meeting.
  25. The Board was updated regarding the recent communication from the Shelby County Interscholastic Athletic Association, which has informed TSSAA that GRAD Academy, W.E.B. Dubois High School of Arts and Technology, and Dubois High School of Leadership and Public Policy are closing for the 2018-2019 school year. The middle schools at both of the W.E.B. Dubois locations will remain open.
  26. Approved Soccer Regulation regarding postseason field dimensions. Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, schools hosting contests at the regional, sectional, and sub-state level must secure a field with minimum dimensions of 110 yards by 65 yards. If a school scheduled to host the regional, sectional, or sub-state contest does not have a field with these minimum dimensions, the game can still be played at the facility provided there is mutual agreement of both schools involved in the contest. If there is no mutual agreement, and no available field within a 15-mile radius of the host school, the hos school may request an exception from the state office.
  27. Denied Spring Hill High School’s request to change districts from District 11-AAA to District 8-AAA for the sports of boys’ and girls’ basketball, baseball, and softball effective with the 2019-2020 school year.
  28. Approved proposal from the Wrestling Advisory Committee to add a Girls’ Wrestling Dual Meet which would be held in conjunction with the State Dual Meet Tournament.
  29. Approved the request of Career Magnet Academy for TSSAA Membership. Career Magnet Academy is under the jurisdiction of the Knox County Board of Education. Career Magnet Academy is accredited by AdvanceEd and has an enrollment of approximately 300 students in grades 9-12. They plan to compete in bowling, cross country, and golf. They will be placed in Division I, Class A, District 4 in bowling, Region 2 (Small) in cross country, and District 3 (Small) in golf.
  30. Denied Grace Christian Academy’s (Franklin) request to continue to be allowed to participate in the post-season basketball series and while playing an independent football schedule.
  31. Denied the request of Concord Christian School to participate in the post-season basketball series during the 2018-19 school year while not fielding a varsity football team.
  32. Approved the request of Pleasant View School for TSSAA Membership. This is an independent school in Shelby County that has been in existence for approximately 23 years. They are accredited through AdvancEd and their current enrollment in Pre-school through 12th grade is 460. They have approximately 150 students in grades 9-12. Pleasant View School will be placed in Division II, Class A (West), District 6 in basketball, volleyball, cross country, soccer, tennis, and track and field. These are the sports they currently offer at their school. The request is to become a TSSAA member in middle and high school effective at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year.
  33. Approved the request of Family Christian School for TSSAA Membership. FCS was a member in 2015-16 and had a cooperative agreement with North Side High School in one sport. They are requesting to rejoin the organization as an “affiliate member” in 2018-19 and form a cooperative agreement with Sacred Heart. Their current enrollment is 22 students in grades 9-12. FCS will be placed in Division II, Class A. Affiliate membership will not affect their postseason participation since they will not be offering sports at their school.
  34. Approved the request of Macon Christian Academy for TSSAA Membership. Macon Christian Academy requesting to join TSSAA in order to co-op with another member school. Macon Christian Academy has been granted approval as a Category 1 school. It is an independent school with twelve students in grades k-12. They will be placed in Division I for the 2018-19 school year, as requested.
