I know many of you are preparing to (hopefully) slow down a bit over the next couple of weeks. We recognize, however, that the work continues with winter sports still in action. As I approach the semester break for the twenty-eighth time since beginning my career as a teacher at Springfield High School in 1997, one constant has been the need for time to reflect and enjoy the blessings we’ve been given, especially with family. I truly hope that you’ll have a few days to rest and recharge in the coming days.
I have been blessed to witness my two kids participate in education-based athletics. My youngest is a senior this year, and this chapter will soon conclude for our family. I am immensely grateful to the coaches, administrators, and teachers who have been a part of their journey. I hope you'll consider the profound impact you’re making in the lives of the students you serve. Remember this when things get busy again or it feels like a grind as you prepare for the next event.
During my early days coaching wrestling, I recall many mornings over the holidays when I didn’t necessarily feel like showing enthusiasm and leading practice. Later in my career as an assistant principal, I remember a few instances when I did not want to come in and serve as a game administrator for a basketball game during the break. However, as I have gotten older, it has become more apparent that this was for the greater good. We all have our roles in helping orchestrate the activities that benefit students. We can measure the value of these activities by the long-term impact on students as they journey to adulthood. The relationships and life lessons I developed through these activities have carried me through my professional life and, more importantly, my personal life. I am forever grateful for those with whom I shared these moments. These experiences would not have been possible without folks like you.
We are so thankful to you, who serve our young people and guide them into becoming adults who will one day take care of us. You play a vital role in positively influencing the students you serve by being part of the essential 'village' each student needs!
Get some well-deserved rest, and enjoy your break!
