TMSAA Minutes

February 15, 2006

The Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association held its second meeting of the school year on Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at the TSSAA office in Hermitage.  Committee members in attendance were Robert Cole, Michael Carter, Mike Fulkerson, Vic King, Chic Nute, and Katie O’Brien.

The committee was presented with the current membership list for approval.  Nineteen schools applied for first-time membership this year.  With the addition of the new schools, the Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association now stands at 296 member schools.

Committee members decided on the topics they felt needed to be discussed with our Athletic Directors during the TMSAA Forum at the Athletic Directors Conference on April 4th.  The conference will be held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Brentwood this year.  The topics that will be discussed are as follows:

1.     TMSAA Wrestling Weight Classes

2.     Administrators’ Meetings

3.     Non-Faculty Coaches Requirements

4.     Post-Season Basketball Tournaments

In our last meeting, the committee decided to take a look at the TMSAA Sports Calendar in order to see if any adjustments needed to be made.  After discussing each sport and what is currently allowed, the committee tabled this item for further discussion at a future meeting.  However, a statement was added which reads as follows:

POST SEASON TOURNAMENT OR BOWL GAMES may be played provided the plan is approved by the State Office annually.  Any Post Season Tournament or Play-Off format that exceeds the number of regular season contests allowed must be approved.

The TMSAA Wrestling Regulations state that by coaches or league agreement, matches may be held but not counted in the match or tournament score for wrestlers above 225 but still below the high school maximum of 275.  The regulation was changed to read that the top weight class will be 250 instead of 225 and all matches count.  The minimum weight for the 250 pound class shall be 174.  This will add one weight class.

The committee was informed that some administrators are concerned about the number of basketball games being played in one night during Area and Sectional competition.  Some areas are playing four games on a school night with the last game scheduled to start at 8:30 P.M.  This is a major problem for teams traveling because students are not getting home until midnight or after on a school night.  At the high school level, the TSSAA Board of Control has mandated that schools cannot play more than two games on a school night during post-season tournaments beginning with the 2006-07 school year.  No action was taken.  However, the committee stated that this situation will be monitored carefully.  Additional steps may be taken if deemed necessary.
