  8. District and Regional Basketball Tournament Sites
As the Board is aware, the schools in the districts select their district basketball tournament site and the schools in the district, on an alternating basis, select the regional basketball tournament site each year. Many of our districts and regions do an excellent job in site selection by placing the tournament, geographically, in a central location to the schools in the district or the region. Many, however, are selecting sites on a rotating basis or other options and the site is many times at an extreme geographic location to the schools in the district or region. Problems are compounded in regard to region sites because the schools are coming from a wider geographic area. The problem is compounded even more when one realizes the officials, who are many times coming from a neutral association, are having to travel to the extreme location.

Being brought to the Board's attention for discussion, it would appear to be three options that could be considered:

  1. Continue in the same format for allowing the sites to be selected.
  2. The Board of Control or TSSAA state office select tournament sites, based on a request to host the tournament from schools in the districts and regions - Logistically, this would be a bad dream, if not a nightmare. There are, obviously, many negatives to this, both from a philosophical standpoint and from a pragmatic standpoint of the state office or Board selecting all of the sites.
  3. The middle of the road proposal would be to look at the regional tournament sites first or look at regions and districts both, have schools submit the recommendations for the regional tournament sites (minimum of three in order of preference) with strong preference being given to the site that is the most centrally located to the schools in the district or region. There could also be other things considered at the request of the district and region. The Board or state office staff would then select the site.
In many cases, this proposal or discussion is not needed. However, there are many district and region sites selected that create tremendous travel for everyone involved and are not sound decisions in terms of the facility being used or the revenue for the tournament.
