BOARD OF CONTROL MINUTES

 

August 21, 2000

 

 

1.      Authorized the state office to select sites and make plans for conducting regional and state tournaments or meets in golf, tennis, cross country, track, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, and soccer.

 

2.      Approved the financial aid report for the 2000-2001 school year.

 

3.      Approved the recommendation of the Division II Committee for three classifications (0-299, 300-599, 600 and above) in football for Division II schools.

 

4.      Approved the financial report for the 2000 Spring Fling.

 

5.      Received the auditor's report for the 1999-2000 fiscal year and approved the budget for the 2000-2001 school year.

 

6.      In golf, voted to continue with three classifications (AAA, A-AA, Division II) and three tournaments.  Also, voted to go to nine regions in A-AA by making Region 7 into two regions and qualifying the winning team and the top three individuals from each region to the state tournament rather than the top team and top four individuals as in the past.  Region 7 has over twice as many school participating in golf as the other regions.

 

7.      Denied the request of Hickman County High School for an exception to the independent rule for girls' who participate in coed soccer at a school in the spring as a result of the school not having a girls' soccer team. 

 

8.      Heard and reviewed the following:

 

  1. Basketball officials' camps - Eight camps held this summer with over 300 officials in attendance.
  2. Agenda for fall Administrators' Meetings to be held in September.
  3. Sports Information Directors' Meetings - Held during August at eight locations explaining the program, the role of the SID, iHigh.com, etc.  Matthew Gillespie of the TSSAA staff and Heather Carter of iHigh.com held the meetings.
  4. Interactive Eligibility Meetings - Held during August at eight locations explaining the new program.  Of 135 schools attending the meetings, 110 are entering eligibility interactively.  Earl Nall and Ronnie Carter held the meetings.
  5. Update on classification process - Enrollments and classifications will be released the first week in September.  Schools will have until October 2 to move up in classification.  The Board of Control will set all districts and regions at the November 16 meeting.
  6. Report from Host Communications on marketing plan at this point.
  7. Report and announcement of BlueCross/BlueShield as title sponsor of football championships and the BlueCross Bowl as the State Football Championhips in Division I.
  8. Update on TSSAA Hall of Fame and beginning of a Board for the Hall of Fame which will be a separate 501(3)(c).
