Defending Champion Courtney Wood and Brentwood High Lead After Day One

CHAPEL HILL- - -Last year’s AAA champion, Courtney Wood of Brentwood High School, finished day one of the 1999 tournament with two birdies and a double bogey for a par score of 73 at Henry Horton State Park. Laura McCaslin of Cookeville, who shot a one-under par 35 on the front nine, is in second place behind Wood by two strokes.

Sarah Bonner of Dobyns Bennett High School shot a 34 on the front nine to help put her three strokes behind the leader in third place. Mary Elizabeth Brice of Tullahoma, last year’s runner-up, is four strokes behind the leader, tied for fourth with Julie Smith from David Crockett High School. Elizabeth Agee from Dyersburg is in sixth place with a first day score of 80.

Courtney Wood’s score of 73 also helped lead Brentwood to a two-stroke lead over Cookeville. Wood’s teammate Abbie Goodrich shot an 82 to give Brentwood their team total of 155.

Laura McCaslin’s combined with teammate Kristen Fletcher, who shot an 82, for a team total of 157, just two strokes behind Brentwood. Dobyns-Bennett is in third place, six strokes behind Brentwood with a 161. They are led by Sarah Bonner’s 76. The first tee time for the girls is at 8:20 on Wednesday morning.

Andy Vaughn and Oakland High School Lead After Day One

Andy Vaughn of Murfreesboro Oakland shot the third lowest 18-hole total in boys’ state tournament history with a 65 to finish seven under par and a five-stroke lead over Willie Daniels of Tullahoma, Major Sharpe of Knoxville West, Eric Anderson of Dickson County, and Brandon Skeen of Jefferson County who all shot two under par for a first day total of 70. Vaughn birdied five of the first nine holes at Henry Horton State Park Golf Course. He shot a 33 on the back nine to give him the score of 65 and seven under par for the day.

Hunter Williams of Centennial, Clayton Ellis of White Station, and Andy Burris of McMinn County all shot a 71 to finish six strokes behind the leader after day one. Eleven other individuals are within eight strokes of the leader.

Andy Vaughn’s score of 65, combined with three scores of 77 from teammates Spencer Provow, Matt Lufkin, and Steve Kline to put Oakland in first place by six strokes over last year’s defending champions McMinn County, who shot a 302. Knoxville West and White Station are tied for third place with a score of 303, just one stroke behind McMinn.

Clarksville and Morristown West both finished with a score of 304 and eight strokes behind first place Oakland. Centennial finished with a team score of 306 and Bartlett shot a 321. The boys will begin the final day at 8:00 a.m.
