Jacobs and Davidson Academy Lead After First Day

MURFREESBORO- - -Sarah Jacobs, the defending A-AA girls individual champion from Davidson Academy, is on pace to win her second straight championship. She shot two birdies and two bogies at Old Fort Golf Course to give her par (72) and a seven stroke lead over Melissa Kinnard of Lewis County.

Grace Holmes of Lexington, Mary Jaco from the University School of Jackson, and Lacy Mitchell of White House are tied for third place with a score of 81.

As Sarah Jacobs goes for her second straight individual title, Davidson Academy is in pursuit of their fifth consecutive state title. They have a twelve shot lead over Lewis County (166). Jacobs combined with eighth grade teammate Jamey Dillard, who improved from a 110 in the region to an 82 in her first day of competition at the state tournament, to give Davidson Academy the leading score of 154. Lenoir City is in third with a score of 171. Both Davidson Academy and Chattanooga Baylor have four state titles, the second most in state history.

The girls will begin the final day of competition on Thursday with the first group teeing off at 8:20 a.m.

MURFREESBORO- - -Chris Webb of Jackson Christian and Polk Brown of Kingston both shot a 71 for one under par after the first day of competition in the boys A-AA championship. Deke Berlin of Giles County is one stroke behind the leaders after he shot a 72 to finish at par for the day.

A total of twelve players are within five strokes of the lead. Thirty-two individual boys shot under 80 in the first round of play.

Marshall County and Kingston finished tied with team scores of 300. Marshall County, who is going for their third consecutive state title, were led by Joey Morefield with a 73 and Matt Brock, who shot 74 to finish tied for seventh. The two finished tied for fifth place in last year’s state tournament. Kingston was led by Polk Brown, who is tied for the individual lead, and Aaron Wisener, who is just four strokes behind the two leaders.
