CLASS A STATE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT

Game 1

CLEVELAND – Eric Brandon struck out nine batters in six innings of work to help lead Franklin Road Academy to a 10-4 victory over Upperman in the first round of the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament at Lee University Tuesday.

Brandon (12-0) allowed two runs on five hits for FRA (30-1). He also had a double at the plate.

Jason Warpool drove in a pair of runs for the Big Blue with a couple of hits. Kendall Gregory had a solo home run in the third inning. Five FRA players put together multi-hit games.

Nick Davis (5-3) took the loss for Upperman (22-12). He struck out five batters in 3-1/3 innings of work. He also singled and drove in a run.

FRA will play the winner on Tuesday’s Rockwood-University School of Jackson winner Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (EDT) at Engel Stadium in Chattanooga. Upperman plays the loser of that game at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Game 2

CLEVELAND – University School of Jackson scored three runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 3-2 victory over Rockwood in the first round of the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament Tuesday at Lee University.

Drew Lester picked up the complete game victory for the Bruins (33-5). He scattered four hits and allowed two earned runs and reached base in all three plate appearances. Mark Barnett also doubled in a run and scored.

Defense let down Rockwood pitcher Brent Neal, who scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs.

Game 3

CHATTANOOGA -- Richie Bryant scattered six hits to lead his Rockwood team to a 6-0 victory Wednesday over Upperman in the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament at Engel Stadium.

The Tigers (26-5) will play the loser of Wednesday's Franklin Road Academy-University School of Jackson game Thursday at 10 a.m. (EDT) at Cleveland State Community College.

Bryant struck out seven and walked one in improving to 8-3.

Rockwood squeezed home a run in the second inning and took advantage of the ensuing error to plate two additional runs to take a 3-0 lead.

Brett Neal's bunt scored Corey Brasel, who was running for catcher Derek Pair. Jace Chaffin threw to first, but the first baseman missed the bag, allowing Neal to reach safely. Paul Sivik and Neal would score as Wyatt Wilson had a bases-loaded, two-run single with two outs in the inning.

The Tigers took advantage of another error to score three runs in the fifth inning.

Rockwood loaded the bases as Chad Payne reached on an error, Sivik on a fielder's choice and Neal on a walk. Payne scored on a wild pitch and Clay Barnes drove in the other two with a single to left field.

Chaffin (7-1) found hard-luck on the mound for Upperman. He allowed just one earned run, five hits, walked six and struck out six.

Game 4

CHATTANOOGA -- Nash Powell did it all for University School of Jackson Wednesday in the winner's bracket final of the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament.

Powell pitched into the 10th inning and drove in the winning run in the 12th inning to lead the Bruins past Franklin Road Academy 7-6.

The game was the longest tournament game in TSSAA history. USJ (35-5) advances to Thursday's 5 p.m championship game here. FRA (30-2) will play Rockwood at 10 a.m. Thursday at Cleveland State. The winner of that game will play in the championship series.

J.R. Dunn was hit by a pitch by Travis Horschel (2-2) to lead off the 12th inning. Eric Brandon, Tuesday's winning pitcher, relieved Horschel and got the next two outs before Powell singled up the middle, his fourth hit of the game. The four hits tied the state tournament record, last accomplished in 1997.

Powell pitched 10 innings, allowed eight hits, six runs -- five earned, walked five and struck out three. John Gorman improved to 10-0 with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Bruins rallied with three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead. Tommy Sikes drove in a run with a single and Powell followed with a two-run double to center.

FRA tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon doubled to left-center to score Chris Guerra, who had singled.

Both teams scored in the 10th inning to extend the game.

Bucky Gulley, pinch-running for Sikes, scored on a wild pitch after the Bruins had loaded the bases twith two outs.

The Big Blue scored in their half of the inning when Whit Dulin, running for Josh Brown, scored on a grounder to third by Jason McKee. The USJ third baseman threw late to the plate.

Horschel, who relieved Kendall Gregory in the third inning, picked up the loss. The FRA reliever threw 8-1/3 innings, allowed nine hits, five runs (two earned), walked four and struck out six.

Game 5

CLEVELAND -- Franklin Road Academy advanced to the TSSAA Class A Championship game with a 15-4 rout of Rockwood Thursday at Cleveland State University.

The Big Blue (31-2) took control in the first inning by plating five runs.

Whit Dulin had a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and drove in four to pace FRA. Jason Warpool and Grant Jarnigan each had two hits and drove in two.

FRA took advantage of Rockwood's wildness. Rockwood pitchers walked 12 batters while the defense committed seven errors.

Jason Cofer and Clay Barnes had two hits each for Rockwood, which ended its season with a 26-6 record.

Game 6

CHATTANOOGA -- University School of Jackson won its first state championship, holding off Franklin Road Academy 7-6 Thursday in the TSSAA Class A Baseball Tournament.

The Bruins' Drew Lester won his second game of the tournament to improve to 13-1 and earn the most valuable player award. Lester allowed four hits, all in the last inning when the Big Blue scored twice. He struck out two and walked none.

He caught a break as he relieved John Gorman with bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning. FRA's Eric Brandon, thinking there was four balls on the batter, walked home and was tagged out to end the inning in which the Big Blue had already plated four runs.

USJ had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Franklin Payne doubled home a run and Andrew White plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

FRA answered with four in the bottom of the fourth inning. Whit Dulin had a two-run single to tie the game and Eric Brandon and Chris Jones had RBI-singles to give the Big Blue the lead.

The Bruins cut the lead to 4-3 with a run in the sixth inning on Nash Powell's single to left field.

USJ took the lead by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh inning.

J.R. Dunn drove in the tying run with a single to left. Greg Fay singled home two runs to give the Bruins the lead. Powell had an infield single to end the scoring.

The Big Blue tried to catch up in the bottom of the frame. Josh Brown and Travis Horschel had RBI singles to pull FRA to 7-6.

The game ended as Jason McKee grounded out to Dunn at second base, who threw to Lester, who was covering first and beat McKee to the bag, with runners on first and second.

Brandon, who picked up a victory in the tournament opener, dropped to 12-1 on the season after the loss.
