FIFTEEN TO JOIN THE TSSAA HALL OF FAME AT ANNUAL INDUCTION CEREMONIES MARCH 18

The 2006 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. Fifteen new members will be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon at the James Union Building on the MTSU campus in Murfreesboro on Saturday, March 18. This is the same day as the Division I boys' basketball finals, which will be held at Murphy Center on the campus of MTSU as well. This will be the largest number of inductees since the Hall of Fame began in 1982.

Four administrators, seven coaches, three officials, and one contributor will be inducted that day to join others in the annual gathering of those selected since the process began in 1982.

Those being inducted at this year's luncheon are: the late Norman Dillon, administrator from Cleveland; the late Fred S. Elliott, administrator from Memphis; the late Jim Phifer, administrator from Chattanooga; Mike Reed, administrator from Morristown; Charlie Baxter, coach from Erwin; the late William J. Gupton, coach from Nashville; W.C. Johnson, coach from Columbia; the late Jim May, coach from Oneida; the late David Rhodes, coach from Lobelville; Bobby Snyder, coach from Gray; William Woodruff, coach from Memphis; Jerry Carpenter, official from Martin; Eugene London, official from Tullahoma; Henry Pittman, official from Bartlett; and Earl Nall, contributor from Kingston.

The Hall of Fame luncheon will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18. The luncheon is to not only honor the new inductees and their families, but to honor all past inductees into the TSSAA Hall of Fame.

The late Norman Dillon - Former principal at Pickett County High School and Charleston High School and longtime member of the TSSAA Board of Control.

The late Fred Elliott - Former principal at Whitehaven High School for 25 years and one of the pioneers in the early years of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

The late Jim Phifer - Outstanding golf and basketball coach at Chattanooga City High School and Notre Dame High School. Principal at Notre Dame High School for over 20 years and longtime member of the TSSAA Legislative Council.

Mike Reed - Outstanding administrator for over 20 years at Morristown West High School. Member of the TSSAA Board of Control for the past 20 years, serving 11 years as president.

Charlie Baxter - Baseball coach for 25 years and softball coach for five years at Unicoi County High School. He had over 800 victories in both sports with five state championships and five runners-up.

The late William J. Gupton - Boys' basketball coach at Pearl High School from 1938 to 1960 where he won 11 state championships and was leader of the Tennessee High School Athletic Association, which was the association for black high schools prior to integration.

W. C. Johnson - Basketball and baseball coach for 30 years in Maury County and administrator for 15 years at Mt. Pleasant High School. He had over 800 victories as basketball coach.

The late Jim May - Outstanding football coach and girls' basketball coach for 30 years with the majority of that time at Oneida High School. His football teams had over 200 victories and 10 district or regional championships. His girls' basketball teams won over 70 percent of their games.

The late David Rhodes - Outstanding player, basketball coach, and administrator at Perry County High School. Served as superintendent of schools for 17 years until his death in 2005.

Bobby Snyder - Outstanding boys' basketball coach at Boones Creek High School and Daniel Boone High School for over 40 years. His teams won over 800 games.

William Woodruff - Outstanding football and golf coach at Carver High School for over 20 years and longtime administrator in the Memphis City School System.

Jerry Carpenter - Outstanding football and basketball official from Martin, Tennessee for over 30 years, working numerous football playoffs, championship games, and seven state basketball tournaments. Leader in both football and basketball associations in the training of officials.

Eugene London - Outstanding football, basketball, and baseball official from Tullahoma. Officiated over 50 years in high schools across the state of Tennessee, working state championships in all three sports.

Henry Pittman - Football and basketball official from Memphis who has worked for over 50 years in high schools, including numerous playoffs and tournaments.

Earl Nall - Technology Director for TSSAA. Longtime contributor to TSSAA who created TSSAA website in 1996, one of the top high school websites in the nation. Recognized as one of the leading experts in the area of technology in high school sports in the nation.
