Baylor's Beth Felts and Catherine Hicks Lead Individuals and Combine to Give Baylor Lead for Team Championship

WINCHESTER - - - Beth Felts of Baylor School in Chattanooga shot a 68 (35-33) to take a six stroke lead into the final day of competition at the 2003 Division II state golf tournament. She won the individual state title as a sophomore in 2001 and finished tied for fourth at last year's tournament. Her first day score of 68 is tied for the second best 18-hole individual score in state tournament history. Sarah Jacobs of Davidson Academy (1999) and Elizabeth Dotson of Creek Wood (2002) are the other two golfers to shoot a 68. Jacobs set the record when she shot a 67 in 1998.

Felts combined with teammate Catherine Hicks, who shot a 74 (35-39), to give Baylor a team score of 142 and 22-stroke lead over University School of Nashville in team competition. Their team score of 142 is the second lowest 18-hole team score in state tournament history. The state record of 138 was set by Davidson Academy in 1998. Baylor is going after a state record ninth state championship. They have won their eight previous championships consecutively, beginning in 1995, for the most consecutive titles won by a team in any sport. Baylor's Brooke Pancake shot a 78 (37-41) to finished day one in sixth place.

St. Benedict's Taylor Bunnell, who finished runner-up at last year's state tournament, shot a 75 (38-37) to finish day one in third place and seven strokes off the lead. Asleigh Garman of St. Cecilia shot a 76 (35-41) to finish day one in fourth with University School of Nashville's Calle Nielson one stroke behind her with a 77 heading into the final day of competition.

Baylor's Seth Brandon Ties Course Record and State Record With 63 at Bear Trace; Baylor Leads Team Competition

WINCHESTER - - - It was a record first day for Baylor's Seth Brandon. The senior golfer shot a 63 (30-33) to finish the first day of the Division II state golf tournament with a five-stroke lead over Scott Tashie of Memphis University School who shot a 68 (34-34). Brandon's first day score of 63 ties the state tournament record for best 18-hole individual score. Former Baylor golfer Richard Spangler shot a 63 in 1995.

Brandon eagled both holes number three and sixteen. He birdied five other holes and only shot a bogie on one hole.

Brandon's score of 30 on the front nine also ties a state tournament record for best nine hole individual score. Spangler also holds is one of the other two to have shot a 30 on nine holes the state tournament. Clarksville's Mason Rudolph did it in 1952.

Seth \Brandon's teammate Harris English finished with a 70 (32-38) to finish tied with Neil Goodson of Knoxville Webb for third place after day one. Brandon and English combined with teammates John Barnett (75), and Matt Cunningham (76) to give Baylor a five-stroke lead over Knoxville Webb for the team title. Chris Farnsworth shot a 77 (35-42) after day one of competition. Their team score of 284 is the third lowest 18-hole team score in state tournament history.

Baylor is going after their tenth state golf championship. They won three consecutive titles from 1999-2001 and finished runner-up to McCallie at last year's championship.

Four individuals, Neil Goodson of Webb School, Harris English of Baylor, Drew Maliniak of Christian Brothers, and Logan Young of Briarcrest are all tied for third with a first day score of 70. Five individuals shot a 72 to finish day one tied for seventh place.

Ross Sutton of Battle Ground Academy provided a highlight moment when he shot a hole-in-one on the par three seventeenth hole. Sutton finished the day with an 85 (46-39).
